In Japanese superstition, the Yang Sanpaku condition indicates murderers, psychopathic individuals, or individuals filled with anger. Yang sanpaku refers to the sclera (the white portion), which is clearly visible above the iris. What are the types of sanpaku eyes?Īccording to Japanese traditional beliefs, sanpaku eyes are generally categorized into two types - Yang and Yin Sanpaku. There are, however, no exact studies or proofs for this. In Asian countries, especially in Japan, sanpaku is associated with one’s destiny and also indicates a physical and/or mental imbalance. However, the study has not been limited to covering only negative emotions. Other researchers assert that sanpaku eyes are a sign of psychopathy because of the strange pupil appearance. Scientifically sanpaku eyes are called bilateral deviation, caused by a variety of factors such as fatigue, endocrine imbalance, aging, physical trauma, overweight, anorexia, congenital craniofacial anomalies, diabetes, depression, inadequate blood circulation to the head over time, high blood pressure, a slouched posture that renders to improper eye muscle balance, and side effects of plastic surgery (blepharoplasty or liposuction). Some people are born with sanpaku eyes, but there are also many other facts, and recent developments have been recorded for sanpaku eyes. Sanpaku can be seen with one or both eyes. Thus, a person with sanpaku eyes looks straight, and you can clearly see the sclera (the white portion of the eyes) at the bottom or top of the iris. In simple language, sanpaku eyes refer to the small iris therefore, it only covers about 2/3 or less of the vertical axis of the eye. Generally, the white portion of the eye (the sclera) is visible from two sides - left and right, but in some people, the sclera is visible from three sides - left, right, upper side, or lower side. The term “Sanpaku” refers to eyes in which white space is more expansive above or beneath the iris. In Japanese, “Sanpaku” translates as “three whites.” The word was first introduced in the mid-1960s by George Ohsawa. However, in Oriental Medicine, when the white part becomes visible above or beneath the eyes, it denotes certain psychological or physical inequalities in the body. The eyes have an iris, the colored part structurally located in the middle of the eyes encircled by upper and lower eyelids with no scleral (the white portion) shown above or beneath. The eyes catch glow and transform it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons. Living beings possess an eye and a visual system, allowing them to glimpse and process visual elements and perform photoreactions independently of vision.
